SMTP
SMTP is an acronym standing for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. This is the standard protocol used on the internet to exchange mail between most mail servers as well as the protocol used by email clients to send outgoing messages. Since this is a standardized protocol, a very wide variety of email servers and clients can exchange email without having to know much about each other. Email clients use another protocol, POP, to pickup incoming email.
